Visitor’s Question
I had a small coin-sized patch of alopecia that I noticed earlier this year. GP did blood tests only showed a slight iron deficiency. So I was told to take Spatone liquid iron supplement daily and increase iron in my diet which I did both.
The patch has continued to get a lot bigger, and GP agreed to retest blood. Second results showed no change in my iron levels. So I’ve more than doubled my liquid iron intake on GP’s recommendation. I’m now taking Feroglobin liquid iron twice a day and still eating extra in the diet. Although I have a few white hairs appearing at original alopecia site, the patch continues to get bigger, and my hair seems to be thinning all over. GP says I can’t be referred to an NHS consultant as I don’t have 50% hair loss yet (lucky me!). So I’m looking for your help, please.
I’m anxious about how much hair I’m losing and its affecting my confidence. It like some advice and guidance, please.
Shuna’s Answer
Thank you for contacting me.
The GP’s have a difficult time following their guidelines when it comes to testing and referring to hair loss conditions. The part of the range needed for general health is lower than for optimum hair growth.
I may suggest some additional tests to be carried out, which can also be arranged privately. The patches can be emotionally triggered, and we will discuss more following examination during your hour-long consultation.
I may ask you to have periodic treatments with me and use a treatment regimen at home; full instructions will be provided and my ongoing support.
I look forward to hearing from you.
