What causes extremely dry scalp?

There are many reasons behind different scalp conditions, and in fact, there is no such thing as a dry scalp. People tend to think that the minute they see dandruff on their shoulders, or under their nails when they scratch their head, that this is due to a dry scalp.

In the case of seborrheic eczema, one of the most common scalp conditions, this is due to an overgrowth of bacteria and yeasts and is therefore actually an oily scalp condition. If you have seborrheic eczema on your scalp, your scalp may feel itchy, could have an odour, be sore/tender, have pustules or spots and can get greasy very quickly.

Another misunderstanding of “dry scalp” is psoriasis, a skin condition that causes overlapping thickened scales of skin that are not shed as often as they should be. The skin cell turnover is too slow and specialised treatments and frequent washing is required to return the scalp to normal. This condition can also be found on the body and can cause pitting and ridges to the fingernails, but again, is not down to having dry skin.
