What do I do if fringe or part of my front hair does not grow?

Blog Posts

Hair loss can be caused by many factors and start gradually as a few extra hairs in the brush or suddenly where you have a handful of fallen hairs in your hand after washing. One complaint I often hear a lot from my patients is their hair and fringe refuses to grow. The common questions around this topic are as follow – enquiries may read: my hair on sides of the head won’t grow or how do I get the front of my hair to grow or even one side of my hair won’t grow.

So, what causes a small part of the hair to stop growing and is there anything you can do to treat the problem? Here, you’ll discover everything you need to know about this common issue.

What could be causing my front hair or fridge not growing?

When part of the hair or fringe doesn’t grow, it usually indicates an issue with the growth cycle. The hair’s natural cycle consists of three stages which are:

  • Growth (Androgen) phase
  • Resting (Catagen) phase
  • Shedding (Telogen) phase

Problems can occur during any period, but typically when part of the hair appears to stop growing, it is caused by an interruption of the growth phase. The most common issues known to affect the growth of the hair are medication and deficiencies.

Which medications could be contributing to hair loss?

There are numerous medications which can contribute towards hair loss including thyroid, acne and blood-thinning medication. It is quite an extensive list, and the trouble is that medications affect everyone differently. So, while many may not experience hair loss, others will.

How can I tell what is causing the issue?

All patients are advised to seek a proper diagnosis from their doctors to determine the exact cause of hair loss. In particular, I recommend my patients who are experiencing this hair not growing issue to ask for blood tests which look out for:

  • Zinc
  • Ferritin
  • B12
  • Vitamin D
  • Full thyroid profile

The blood tests above will highlight whether the problem is medication or deficiency based. Once you have discovered the cause, you can then seek appropriate treatment. After you have received your blood results, I am more than happy to work with you and guide you towards the best possible treatment plan.

Is it treatable?

Absolutely! The majority of hair loss and hair not growing cases can be treated once the problem has been correctly diagnosed.

If medication has caused the hair loss, you can talk to your doctor to see if you can switch to a different form of medicine. If on the other hand, the hair loss is caused by a deficiency, you can make changes to your diet and lifestyle, which can reverse the issue. Once the underlying problems affecting the hair’s growth phase have been addressed, you can then work on repairing the damage caused.

At Shuna Hammocks Trichology, we specialise in using non-steroidal treatments, specifically the Phillip Kingsley range. We can prescribe numerous effective hair loss treatments including creams, therapy lamps, neck and scalp massage and steamers.
