Visitor’s Question:
My friend (male) is losing so much hair, and they don’t know why. His fingernails show vertical creases and are very soft.
Now I have noticed that he only drinks about 1-2 glasses of water a day and nothing more! Could dehydration be a reason for his hair falling out?
Shuna’s Answer:
While dehydration can make hair dry and brittle, it’s unlikely to be the main reason for your friend’s hair loss. Drinking more water is definitely a good idea, as staying hydrated supports overall health, including the scalp, but there’s probably more going on here.
The creased, soft fingernails could point to a protein deficiency, an autoimmune condition, or something like low thyroid or vitamin B12 levels. It’s worth your friend getting these checked with a doctor.
As a trichologist, I see how stress and poor nutrient absorption can also lead to hair loss. For men, male pattern baldness or other scalp conditions like scarring alopecia could be factors too. A proper look at his hair and scalp would help figure out what’s happening and the best next steps.
If your friend’s ready, I’d be happy to see him for a consultation (Saturdays are available!). You’re welcome to come along for support.
