Patients Question:
I have fragile hair, which may be partly due to a low thyroid, and it was worsened by wearing extensions for 6 months recently, which pulled my hair out in places. I currently have to wear a hairpiece. I would be very grateful for a consultation to find out the best way forward.
Thank you.
Shuna’s Answer:
Thanks so much for sharing that, it makes sense that your hair feels fragile. When thyroid function is underactive, it often affects the hair growth cycle, causing strands to become weaker, slower-growing, or more prone to falling out. Adding mechanical stress from wearing extensions, especially if they are tight or heavy, can trigger breakage or traction alopecia, particularly around the hairline. Wearing a hairpiece is completely understandable in the short term if not damaging to your own hair, while things return to normal.
During a one-on-one consultation, I can examine your scalp and hair to gain a more detailed understanding of the issue. From there, we’ll build a tailored approach to protect your hair, soothe the scalp, and encourage healthy regrowth. There’s always something we can do, even in situations that feel complex or discouraging.
