Help & Support for Menopause Hair Loss
Menopause hair loss can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. You can manage and even improve your hair health with the right therapies, emotional support, and guidance from healthcare professionals. Here are some practical ways to find help and support during this time.
Therapies
Therapies Offered
Shuna does not advise treatments like Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy and low-level laser therapy (LLLT). Despite claims, these treatments cannot promote significant hair regrowth in cases where:
- Side effects from medication are present
- Nutritional deficiencies exist
- Genetic thinning conditions are the cause
The person is affected by trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder).
Hormonal and Non-hormonal Treatments
- Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT): Some patients choose to take HRT for other physical and emotional symptoms with oestrogen or progesterone therapy, but this alone is NEVER sufficient to reduce menopause hair thinning. Shuna can guide you further.
- Topical Estrogen or Anti-Androgen Medications: These may help reduce the impact of hormonal hair loss when applied directly to the scalp. There are medical conditions where this isn’t suitable.
Dietary and Nutritional Support
A balanced diet rich in iron, zinc, vitamin D, and biotin is essential. There are factors such as how often to eat protein, for example, foods that help or impede absorption. We are all so different, and digestion and gut health play a part in this category, too.
Support Groups
While there is online support, it’s pretty general, not always appropriate for your region, and, unfortunately, often rather negative (rather than offering constructive help). This is where Shuna excels and offers help after your consultation, holding your hand with encouragement and acceptance of how fantastic your hair is, so likely still.
Mental Health Support is a problematic area to consider objectively alone. Whether your mental health needs support. Also, your hair thinning concerns occurred as a secondary symptom or vice versa.
Healthcare Providers
- Trichologists: Like Shuna Hammocks, a trichologist specialises in consulting and treating hair and scalp conditions. A consultation with a trichologist can provide a personalised care plan to address hair thinning issues.
- Dermatologists: Some Dermatologists have specific hair loss expertise and see it daily. It is vital to ascertain this before being referred to or seen privately. They are often limited to prescribing steroids or Rogaine- rather than the more preferred holistic approach.
