What is Dandruff?
Dandruff is the general term given to a non-inflammatory excessive scalp scaling. In many cases of dandruff, the scales are greasy to the touch, although a description of “a dry scalp” is often presented at Shuna Hammocks Trichology.
Causes of Dandruff
Dandruff is incredibly common, with most people experiencing a degree of dandruff during their lifetime.
To successfully understand the dandruff condition and keep it away, the individual must know the contributing factors. Causes of dandruff include stress, diet, medication, or a change in hormone levels.
Dandruff Symptoms
Dandruff can cause the scalp to feel itchy, and the sufferer may need to scratch their head. They may be aware of having white flakes of skin on their shoulders and through the lengths of the hair- particularly after brushing or combing the hair. The scalp may feel quite “tender” and sore if dandruff is particularly severe.
If your scalp is itchy or you have scales on it, do not leave this to “hopefully go away.” it most likely will not be without the help of specific medicated products.
Dandruff Treatment
The type of dandruff most often seen in the consultation is ‘Pityriasis Capitis’. This condition usually causes a mild scale without inflammation and is often seen when the patient is under stress. A moderate amount of dandruff can sometimes be treated by using over-the-counter shampoos; however, if you feel your level of dandruff is more persistent than previously mentioned, you are advised to consult Shuna Hammocks Trichology for dietary advice on how to treat and then control your condition.
There are many possible reasons for this, and in consultation, Shuna Hammocks would ask you about the following:
- your general health
- the level of dairy products consumed
- the frequency of washing hair
- your stress levels
- which part of the menstrual cycle you are on, and
- Whether there is an imbalance of hormones – an increased level of testosterone can alter the composition of the sebum produced
In addition to the increased cell turnover, dandruff usually occurs when there is a change in the number of bacteria on the scalp; we can treat this scalp condition with an increased frequency of hair washing. The epidermis (upper layer of the skin) is covered in “microflora”, which is made up of many elements, one of which is bacteria. This alters for many reasons, including humidity, hormone levels, stress factors and the product content used to clean the skin.
